Welcome to Scrabo Golf Club
"We arrived as visitors and left as friends" -
Founded in 1907 Scrabo Golf Club is situated high above
Newtownards Northern Ireland, 500ft above sea level overlooking Strangford Lough. Scrabo Golf Club is a picturesque eighteen hole 6,227 yards par 71 golf course set in the
beautiful County Down countryside.
The famous landmark Scrabo Tower overlooking the golf course was built as a memorial to the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry and commands impressive views over Newtownards town and the Northern part of Strangford Lough.
Scrabo golf course itself is set in the shadow of its famous tower. With its own unique personality, challenge and charm it is a favourite amongst Northern Ireland golfers. The course offers magnificent views over Strangford Lough and the Mourne Mountains and on a clear day Scotland and the Isle of Man can be seen from many holes. Renowned for its links style, gorse-bordered fairways, accurate driving is essential, no more so than at the 424m par 4 1st hole which Christy O'Connor Senior described as one of the best opening holes in Ireland.
A warm welcome awaits you in the Clubhouse. There are excellent bar and restaurant facilities, all with amazing views of the Ards Peninsula while you wine and dine. With two restaurants, a lounge and dancefloor, the club can host any occasion from birthdays to weddings.
In the words of Kevin Markham (author of 'Hooked'), "Anyone considering golf around Belfast ... or Royal County Down should add Scrabo to the itinerary".
Captain Stephen Rowley’s charity fundraising evening for Marie Curie is
now firmly established as one of the best supported Club events. The function
was first held at Scrabo Golf Club in the year 2000 in memory of his late
mother who had passed away in the Hospice on 3rd December 1999. The event was intended as a gesture of thanks for the loving care the Hospice's Nurses and staff provided during that time. £1400 was raised that evening. It was such a great success, Stephen was encouraged to continue the event annually. Now in its
16th year, Stephen has raised over £63500 for Marie Curie.
Captain Rowley says, "the generosity of family and friends of
Scrabo GC never ceases to amaze me and long may it continue". The
fundraising culminates in the function at Scrabo however the money raised continues all year round with various events from running marathons to fine dining at homes by a top chef. His good friend Gareth Curran even zip wired across Old Trafford in Manchester!
Stephen currently does voluntary work at the fundraising end of the
Hospice. “ I know how appreciative the people there are for the monies raised. It takes an awful lot of money to run the Hospice on a daily basis indeed the current building which houses the patients cost £3 million to build and a substantial amount of that is from donations from the likes of ourselves,” he stated. The event is synonymous with Scrabo Golf Club, even attracting friends and family from England. Stephen added, “long may that continue and you just never know we may reach that elusive target of £100k some day at which time I will be the proudest person in N Ireland and there may even be a few tears shed!”
Stephen also would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every single person who has helped, donated, sponsored or supported over the years; his family and the Hospice are eternally grateful.
